New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has been urged to make a ruthless decision in his very first transfer window at Stamford Bridge. Former Blues midfielder Andy Townsend has warned that current number one Robert Sanchez may not be the long-term answer if Chelsea are truly serious about returning to the top of English football.
Sanchez, who currently commands a £150,000-a-week wage, has endured another highly inconsistent campaign in West London. With Alonso now taking the reins, pressure is mounting on the recruitment team to secure a world-class replacement this summer.
'He has a mistake in him' – Townsend issues Sanchez warning
Speaking to BetVictor, Townsend—who spent three years playing for Chelsea—did not hold back on his assessment of the Spanish shot-stopper.
"Robert Sanchez has produced one or two better performances recently, but I just feel he’s just one of those goalkeepers that will let you down in a big moment," Townsend explained. "He’s got a mistake in him; there’s a mistake never too far away."
Townsend highlighted that in modern football, a goalkeeper cannot afford to breed panic in the defensive line.
"The way that goalies are asked to play, I think you’ve got to sort it out if your goalkeeper gives you the jitters. And he does that, I’m afraid."
Chelsea drawing up summer shortlist
Reports indicate that Chelsea are already actively assessing their goalkeeping options ahead of Alonso’s debut season. The club has reportedly drawn up a definitive shortlist of summer targets, featuring established European internationals alongside emerging talents.
While highly-rated youngster Mike Penders is still locked into the Blues' long-term future plans, a more immediate, elite presence is wanted between the sticks to challenge the standards set by Premier League rivals.
Despite the heavy criticism from pundits and former players, Sanchez does still hold support in high places. Spain national team manager Luis de la Fuente recently backed the 28-year-old, naming him among the best Spanish keepers available and keeping him firmly in the national team setup.
A defining call for Xabi Alonso

For Xabi Alonso, resolving the goalkeeping debate will likely become one of the defining narratives of his first summer in charge. Known for his tactical sophistication and uncompromisingly high standards, the new boss knows that a stable backline is paramount to launching a successful title charge.
Whether Alonso decides to completely replace Sanchez or bring in elite competition remains to be seen, but the spotlight is officially on Chelsea's goal.
